Supreme Court Directives Prompt SEC Action

AMARAVATI — Following direct interventions from the Supreme Court of India, the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (APSEC) has officially extended the nomination process by 48 hours for specified wards across four key Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the YSR Kadapa and Tirupati districts.

The regulatory shift comes in the wake of widespread allegations regarding candidate intimidation, physical attacks, and deliberate obstruction preventing individuals from filing their nomination papers during the initial phase of the local body elections.

According to the revised notification, fresh nominations will be accepted on October 23 and 24 between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, offering a protected window for candidates who faced interference.

Affected Regions and Revised Schedule

The extended nomination facility specifically applies to designated wards within major municipal corporations and municipalities:

* Kadapa Municipal Corporation: Wards 6, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17, 24, 31, 34, 52, and 55 * Rajampet Municipality: Wards 6, 12, 13, 14, 17, 19, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27 * Mydukur Municipality: All wards * Tirupati Municipal Corporation: Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 19, 55, 56, 57, 59, 65, and 66

The updated electoral timeline released by the Commission outlines the subsequent stages of the poll process:

* Scrutiny of Fresh Nominations: October 25, starting 8:00 AM * Withdrawal of Nominations: October 25, until 3:00 PM * Final List of Contesting Candidates: October 25, post-3:00 PM * Polling Day: November 1, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM * Potential Re-poll: November 2, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM * Vote Counting: November 3, starting 8:00 AM

Escalating Political Confrontation

The electoral update has intensified the already charged political climate in the state, marked by a bitter war of words between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

Senior YSRCP leaders have repeatedly accused the ruling NDA alliance of systematically obstructing opposition candidates from approaching filing centers. Allegations range from physical assaults on women candidates and the forcible snatching or tearing of nomination documents to instances of opposition leaders being placed under arbitrary house arrest.

Former minister and senior YSRCP figure Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani) publicly claimed that dozens of violent incidents were logged during successive days of the MPTC and ZPTC nomination cycles, targeting opposition aspirants across multiple districts including Prakasam, Chittoor, and Annamayya.

Conversely, the ruling TDP has vehemently denied the accusations, countering that the opposition is resorting to engineered violence and intimidation tactics to disrupt the democratic exercise. Representatives of the ruling party asserted that unrest in regions such as Rayalaseema, Prakasam, and Palnadu stems from attempts by the opposition to derail local governance polls, pointing fingers back at alleged precedents set during prior local body elections.
