Comprehensive Transport Overhaul Underway

Delhi is bracing for a massive transformation in its urban transit landscape. Under the ambitious framework of the Master Plan for Delhi 2047, authorities have unveiled sweeping proposals designed to streamline daily commutes, drastically reduce road congestion, and seamlessly integrate multiple modes of public transport across the capital region.

The blueprint, which was reviewed during an 11th stakeholder consultation meeting convened on the directions of Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, brings together critical agencies including the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Delhi Traffic Police.

Expanding Rail and Metro Connectivity

At the heart of the infrastructure push is a dramatic scaling up of high-capacity transit corridors. The proposals outline an expansion of Delhi's Metro network from its current 416 kilometers to an extensive 695 kilometers, adding 279 kilometers of new rail connectivity to underserved areas.

Simultaneously, the Namo Bharat regional rapid rail transit network across the National Capital Region is slated for substantial growth, expanding from 82 kilometers to 383 kilometers. Officials emphasized that this dual expansion aims to provide reliable, high-speed public transit alternatives for millions of daily commuters.

Solving the Last-Mile Challenge

Recognizing that a metro journey often represents only a fraction of a commuter's daily commute, the Master Plan places heavy emphasis on multimodal integration and last-mile connectivity.

Major transit hubs such as Sarai Kale Khan, Anand Vihar, and Kashmere Gate have been prioritized for redevelopment. These nodes will feature upgraded infrastructure to allow seamless switching between metro trains, regional rail, city buses, and shared feeder services.

Tackling Traffic Congestion and Parking

To address persistent gridlocks on city roads, the plan proposes targeted engineering interventions, including new roads, underpasses, and elevated corridors at critical bottlenecks. While recent traffic police reviews indicate improved flow across several key intersections, notorious stretches such as Dwarka Mor, Sarai Kale Khan, and Mukarba Chowk remain primary targets for structural redesign.

Furthermore, the initiative tackles the city's acute parking deficit by designating specific Parking Management Areas, optimizing existing lots, and deploying artificial intelligence-based systems to monitor traffic and parking availability in real time. This aligns with the Centre's recent approval of a ₹1,789-crore intelligent traffic management project spanning 42 major corridors.

Focus on Pedestrians and Cyclists

Non-motorized transport has also received significant backing in the blueprint. The Master Plan envisions approximately 200 kilometers of dedicated cycle tracks, enhanced pedestrian pathways, barrier-free access for persons with disabilities, and improved streetscape designs. Notably, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has already floated tenders for the initial phase of a 24-kilometer cycling corridor along the Yamuna riverbank.

To ensure coordinated execution among disparate civic and transport bodies, the creation of a Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority has been formally proposed. Following the notification of the Master Plan 2047 in August, authorities are actively gathering stakeholder feedback to fast-track its implementation.
