Asiatric Lion Severely Injured After Being Hit by Goods Train in Gujarat's Amreli
An endangered Asiatic lion sustained severe injuries and lost part of its tail after being struck by a freight train in Gujarat's Amreli district.

Wildlife Safety Under Scrutiny Following Freight Train Collision
AMRELI — An endangered Asiatic lion sustained severe back and tail injuries early Thursday morning after being struck by a goods train in Gujarat's Amreli district. The collision occurred along the vulnerable rail route running between Damnagar and Liliya.
According to forest officials, the incident took place near Ingorala village, positioned between electric pole numbers 18/9 and 18/8. A pair of lions was attempting to traverse the railway tracks when the freight train, traveling from Pipavav Port toward Dhasa at an estimated speed of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, struck the animal.
Search and Rescue Operations Underway
Railway authorities immediately alerted the state forest department, which mobilized a specialized emergency response team to secure the area. The locomotive was temporarily halted to allow for a preliminary track inspection. During the search, forest personnel recovered the severed portion of the lion's tail, confirming direct physical impact with the train.
Utilizing tracking gear, bloodstains, and paw prints, forest department trackers determined that the injured big cat managed to flee into nearby agricultural fields. Specialized teams are aggressively combing the surrounding scrublands and farmlands to locate the animal and administer urgent veterinary care.
Growing Concerns Over Linear Intrusions
The accident has reignited serious concerns among conservationists and wildlife experts regarding the safety of Asiatic lions inhabiting areas outside the boundaries of protected sanctuaries. The Pipavav-Dhasa rail corridor intersects a well-documented wildlife movement zone, where big cats routinely cross tracks while migrating between coastal habitats and inland forested areas.
Despite standard operating protocols jointly established by the Gujarat Forest Department and railway authorities, wildlife-related railway accidents remain a persistent challenge in the region. Existing preventive measures include protective fencing along vulnerable stretches, periodic clearing of vegetation to enhance visibility, and dedicated track patrols to warn locomotive drivers of active wildlife presence.
In the wake of this incident, forest officials have launched a formal inquiry and are reviewing train speed restrictions and enhanced vigilance protocols along the sensitive rail corridor while field teams continue their search for the injured lion.
