School Violence Shocks Assam District
An assistant teacher at a primary school in Assam’s South Salmara-Mankachar district sustained severe injuries after being attacked with a sharp weapon by the son of the school's cook. The violent episode unfolded while classes were actively underway, sending shockwaves through the local community and raising urgent questions regarding campus security.
The incident took place at the No. 2129 Bowalia Lower Primary School, situated within the Mankachar Education Block. According to local reports, the assailant—identified locally as Pittu, the son of the institution's cook—targeted assistant teacher Dipankar Das unprovoked, inflicting serious wounds.
Terrified Staff Escape and Raise Alarm
The brazen assault created immediate panic across the campus. Another assistant teacher, Begum Umme Habiba, fearing for her safety as the violence erupted, locked herself inside a school washroom. She subsequently managed to flee the premises to a nearby residence, from where she frantically contacted educators at neighboring schools for emergency assistance.
Local teachers rushed to the campus in response to the distress call, securing the area and aiding the victims. Both Dipankar Das and Begum Umme Habiba were promptly transported to the Gajarikandi Block Primary Health Centre. Due to the severity of his trauma, Das was later transferred to the South Salmara-Mankachar District Hospital for advanced medical intervention. Habiba, who lost consciousness due to extreme shock and psychological distress, remained under medical observation at the Gajarikandi facility.
Investigation Underway Amid Security Concerns
The school administration has formally notified the Mankachar Police station, prompting an active law enforcement probe into the incident. Investigators have begun interviewing witnesses and school personnel to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the breach.
Both victims have maintained that the attack was entirely unprovoked, stating they remain unaware of any underlying motive or grievance held by the assailant. The episode has amplified anxieties among local parents and educational staff, who are now demanding stringent safety protocols and institutional security measures across rural primary schools in the region.
