Cheetah Death at Kuno National Park: Special Task Force Formed After Pellets Found in 19-Month-Old Cub
A 19-month-old male cheetah has died in Madhya Pradesh after veterinarians recovered five firearm pellets from its body, prompting a high-level government investigation.

Investigation Underway After Fatal Shooting of Young Cheetah
BHOPAL — Wildlife authorities in Madhya Pradesh have launched a rigorous high-level investigation following the death of a 19-month-old male cheetah, identified as KNG22, who succumbed to severe injuries after being shot with firearm pellets. The incident has raised serious concerns among conservationists regarding the safety and monitoring of re-introduced big cats in the region.
The young feline, an offspring of female cheetah Nirva, was initially rescued on Sunday night from Compartment No. 748 within the Sheopur Territorial Forest Division. Field monitoring teams had flagged that the animal was suffering from critical injuries. Following the rescue, it was immediately transported to Kuno National Park for emergency veterinary intervention.
Medical Findings and Surgical Intervention
Initial clinical assessments, including baseline X-rays conducted at Kuno, revealed multiple foreign metallic objects lodged deep within the animal's tissue. Recognizing the complexity of the trauma, wildlife officials consulted specialized veterinary experts and transferred the cheetah to the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology at Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University in Jabalpur for advanced diagnostic imaging and intensive care.
A subsequent Computed Tomography (CT) scan confirmed the worst fears of the medical team: the foreign projectiles had caused extensive damage to the cheetah's internal organs, musculoskeletal framework, and central nervous system.
"Despite emergency surgical intervention where five firearm pellets were successfully extracted, and sustained, round-the-clock efforts by the specialized veterinary team, the male cheetah could not be saved," Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden Dr. Sameeta Rajora stated in an official briefing.
Government Response and Population Impact
In direct response to the fatality, the Madhya Pradesh state government has constituted a dedicated Special Task Force (STF). Comprising senior forest department officials and specialized police personnel, the newly formed unit has been tasked with determining precisely how the cheetah sustained the gunshot wounds, identifying the perpetrators, and establishing the exact timeline and circumstances surrounding the incident.
This tragic event brings India's overall estimated cheetah population down to 58. Of these, 52 reside within Kuno National Park, four are housed at the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, and two remain at the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, all located within the state of Madhya Pradesh. Forest officials have reiterated their commitment to intensifying patrolling and security measures across sensitive wildlife corridors to prevent similar incidents in the future.
