A Mournful Farewell at Nimtala Ghat

Kolkata witnessed a profoundly solemn and subdued conclusion to its festive season on Saturday as the Durga idol from the Chorbagan Sarbojonin Durgotsav pandal was taken for immersion. Stripped of the traditional euphoria, music, and vibrant celebrations that typically mark Bijoy Dashami, the ritual was carried out under heavy police watch and shadowed by the memory of a devastating tragedy.

Weeks prior, on October 17, a catastrophic stampede broke out amidst a torrential downpour in the narrow lanes surrounding the Chorbagan pandal, claiming 19 lives. The tragedy plunged the city into grief and brought an abrupt halt to the festivities at one of North Kolkata's most artistically acclaimed celebrations.

Unprecedented Silence and Grief

Unlike standard immersion processions characterized by rhythmic dhak beats, sindoorkhela, and celebratory chants, Saturday's procession was a quiet affair. Approximately 30 men accompanied the idol as it was lifted onto a trailer. There were no devotees dancing, no devotional music, and no celebratory offerings.

Local residents expressed profound sorrow as they caught a final glimpse of the deity. For many, the incomplete rituals and the absence of customary celebrations served as a painful reminder of the lives lost. Police personnel heavily guarded the trailer all the way to Nimtala Ghat, where the idol was finally lowered into the Hooghly River as onlookers watched with tear-filled eyes.

Legal Investigation and Official Response

Even as the immersion took place, accountability measures remain underway. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the West Bengal government in consultation with the Calcutta High Court and headed by retired judge Anindita Roy Saraswati, has been granted a three-month deadline to conclude its probe.

Authorities have maintained the Chorbagan pandal under strict seal pending ongoing forensic and structural examinations. Meanwhile, local law enforcement has arrested nine individuals in connection with the stampede, and state officials continue to engage with victim families to extend support and compensation.
