Proactive Measures for Winter Disruptions

As the winter fog season approaches, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has stepped up its preparedness measures to ensure passenger safety and minimize travel disruptions. In a high-level review meeting, authorities directed all commercial airlines to provide timely, transparent updates regarding flight delays, cancellations, and revised departure schedules.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected that dense fog conditions will likely prevail across northern regions from December 15 through February 15. To mitigate the impact on travelers, carriers have been instructed to leverage multiple communication channels—including SMS, email, and dedicated mobile applications—ensuring passengers are fully informed before leaving for the airport.

Strengthening Infrastructure and Ground Support

During the comprehensive review, key stakeholders from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and various security agencies evaluated low-visibility operational readiness.

* Enhanced Help Desks: Airlines must maintain adequately staffed airport help desks and operational helplines capable of assisting stranded or impacted passengers in real-time. * Technical Readiness: The AAI and airport operators have been tasked with verifying the operational integrity of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and Runway Visual Range (RVR) equipment. * Terminal Management: Clear protocols have been established for passenger movement during disruptions, including structured arrangements for terminal re-entry and baggage handling turnaround.

Regulatory Oversight

Senior officials, including DGCA Director General Vir Vikram Yadav and AAI Chairman Puneet Kansal, emphasized strict adherence to regulatory compliance. Air Traffic Control (ATC) and air navigation service providers have been directed to strictly execute low-visibility procedures to maintain airside safety standards throughout the peak winter months.
