Delhi Content Creator Arrested for Racially Abusing Tripura Youth in Viral Video
Delhi Police have arrested content creator Amir Shokeen for subjecting a young man from Tripura to racial slurs in a viral social media video.

Incident Sparks Outrage and Police Action
A disturbing incident of racial discrimination has led to the arrest of a Delhi-based content creator, Amir Shokeen, following widespread public outcry and condemnation from top government officials. Shokeen was taken into custody from the Karol Bagh area after a video surfaced showing him targeting a young man from Tripura with racial slurs and derogatory remarks.
The victim, identified as Lesenjit Reang, revealed in an interview that he was entirely unaware he was being filmed during the encounter. He described how the creator and his associates approached him under the guise of casual conversation before launching into a mocking interrogation.
"I wasn't even aware that they were recording a video. I knew nothing about it," Reang stated. "They were speaking to me in a mocking, jesting manner. They asked me where I'm from, where I live. They even asked if I was the president of China, that sort of thing."
Despite being subjected to offensive stereotyping—including being referred to as "Chinese" and targeted with a derogatory racial slur—Reang noted that he chose to walk away after the interaction concluded, noting that while he felt uncomfortable around strangers, he did not initially realize the severity of the public framing until the footage spread online.
High-Level Condemnation
The incident has reignited nationwide discussions regarding the persistent normalization of racial abuse directed at individuals from India's northeastern states, particularly within digital spaces and metropolitan public areas.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed fierce condemnation over the act, emphasizing that societal tolerance of such behavior fosters a broader culture of hatred. Highlighting the delay in a formal civilian complaint, Rijiju commended law enforcement agencies for taking suo motu cognizance of the offense.
"This evil man will be punished," Rijiju posted on social media. "There was a delay in lodging the official complaint, but Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson. People who tolerate such wicked behavior in the society are also responsible for the spread of hatred."
Criminal Record and Investigation
Due to the gravity of the offense, law enforcement authorities bypassed the need for an immediate civilian FIR, initiating a case directly. Multiple police teams deployed technical surveillance and conducted coordinated raids across the national capital before apprehending Shokeen.
According to police records, the accused is not a first-time offender and is officially listed as a "bad character" at the Sadar Bazaar police station, with several prior criminal cases registered against him. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict legal standards against public acts of harassment and racial discrimination.
