Media personnel gathered outside an investigative office in Kolkata following the high-profile arrest.
Law enforcement agencies intensified their probe into financial irregularities involving former minister Indranil Sen.

Investigation and Arrest

Kolkata Police, in a joint operation with the Enforcement Directorate (ED), arrested former West Bengal minister Indranil Sen following hours of intensive interrogation. The arrest stems from ongoing probes into alleged financial irregularities involving MassArt Society, an organization with which Sen and his wife, Madhuchhanda, were reportedly associated.

The investigation focuses on financial discrepancies concerning the management and ticket sales of Durga Puja preview shows. Authorities have been scrutinizing the financial transactions of the society for a prolonged period, leading up to the recent legal action.

Political Fallout and Allegations

The development triggered sharp political reactions across the state. Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the ongoing investigative efforts by central and state agencies have uncovered substantial evidence warranting immediate legal steps.

"An investigation has been underway against him for a long time. The ED has been probing the case, and so has the Kolkata Police. They must have found something," Adhikari stated. He further alleged that the financial mismanagement may extend beyond an individual level, claiming that the probe could eventually implicate higher-ranking figures.

Adhikari also commented on Sen's political trajectory, referencing his previous associations and transition across political spectrums over the years.

Counter-Allegations from the Trinamool Congress

In response to the arrest, the All India Trinamool Congress strongly criticized the ruling dispensation at the Centre, accusing authorities of targeted actions against political opponents.

Party leadership alleged a double standard in the handling of corruption cases, claiming that political figures facing serious allegations are often shielded or granted leniency upon aligning with the ruling party at the national level, while those maintaining opposing stances face punitive measures.

As the legal proceedings advance, both investigating agencies and political stakeholders remain locked in a war of words regarding the scope and motivations behind the ongoing corruption probes in the state.
