Tragic Toll of Gig Work: Flipkart Delivery Partner Dies After Assault Over Torn Currency Note
A 24-year-old Flipkart Minutes delivery executive in Delhi died by suicide weeks after allegedly being assaulted by a customer over a torn Rs 10 note.

A Routine Delivery Turns Fatal
What was supposed to be a routine delivery for 24-year-old Sameer Hussain ended in an unimaginable tragedy. Hussain, a dedicated delivery executive for Flipkart Minutes who relied on a bicycle to earn his livelihood in east Delhi, tragically succumbed to poisoning on Tuesday after battling for his life in the hospital following an alleged physical assault.
The incident took place on October 4 at approximately 10:30 pm, when Hussain arrived in Vinod Nagar to drop off a coffee order worth roughly Rs 150. According to video statements recorded by Hussain prior to taking his own life, the customer, identified as Rampal Singh, took around 15 minutes to arrange the cash payment.
While Hussain did not object to the delay, he politely requested the customer to replace a torn Rs 10 note included in the payment.
Assault and Humiliation
In video footage recovered following the incident, Hussain recounted how his polite request was met with hostility. The customer allegedly told him to accept the cash or leave. When Hussain reiterated his request, he was reportedly slapped thrice by the customer in the middle of the road.
Deeply shaken not by the physical blow, but by the severe blow to his self-respect and the mockery of his financial struggles, Hussain questioned the indignities faced by daily wage and gig workers.
"Is being poor an abuse?" Hussain asked in the video, expressing profound distress over his vulnerability as an independent worker lacking financial safety nets and institutional support.
Final Message and Call for Accountability
In a second video recorded as his suicide note, Hussain explicitly named the customer and his grandson, Rakesh, holding them responsible for the extreme distress that drove him to take the drastic step. He consumed poison on October 5 and was subsequently admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where he tragically passed away during treatment.
Hussain's grieving mother, Kalima, has since come forward alleging that the accused individuals possess local political connections and attempted to intimidate the family, raising serious concerns regarding the safety, security, and systemic exploitation faced by gig economy workers across the capital.
