Campus Tensions Flare in New Delhi

NEW DELHI — Academic and political tensions have once again gripped Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) following allegations by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) that radical slogans and offensive remarks have been painted across campus walls.

According to the RSS-linked student outfit, controversial graffiti including phrases such as 'Free Umar Khalid' and 'Long Live Naxalbari' appeared on university structures. Furthermore, the organization claimed that derogatory remarks were inscribed directly alongside a portrait of Hindutva ideologue VD Savarkar.

The ABVP has leveled accusations against leftist student organizations, specifically pointing fingers at All India Students' Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora for publicly raising slogans in support of Umar Khalid. Khalid, a former JNU student and left-wing activist, remains incarcerated under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with a 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.

Demands for Administrative Action

Student leaders from the ABVP have condemned the developments, characterizing them as a deliberate attempt to vitiate the academic atmosphere of the institution.

Mayank Panchal, president of the ABVP's JNU unit, argued that freedom of expression cannot serve as a shield for what he termed the insult of national figures and the vandalization of university property. Echoing these sentiments, JNU unit secretary Praveen Piyush emphasized that the campus belongs to a diverse student body and cannot function as an ideological fiefdom.

The outfit has formally urged the university administration to take immediate cognizance of the incidents, identify the individuals responsible, and initiate strict disciplinary measures.

Broader Unrest Across Delhi Universities

The incident follows a separate episode of campus friction at Jamia Millia Islamia, where slogans concerning Jammu and Kashmir recently appeared on walls amid ongoing protests demanding the revival of student union elections. While the administration has faced pushback over security interventions and protest removals, student representatives continue to press for democratic representation on campus.

As authorities at both institutions evaluate the security and administrative protocols, the latest controversies highlight the deep ideological fault lines persisting within India's prominent public universities.
