A World Between Orders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that the global order is undergoing a profound transformation, with several multilateral organizations failing to keep pace with contemporary realities. Delivering a keynote address in the national capital, the Prime Minister described the current era as a "World Between Orders," driven by shifts in trade, technology, and the emergence of new geopolitical powers.

Highlighting the widening gap between institutional frameworks and ground realities, PM Modi pointed directly to the United Nations, arguing that its historical mandate is increasingly falling short against modern complexities.

"The Second World War taught the world a big lesson," the Prime Minister noted, recalling how the foundation of the UN was built on the necessity of dialogue, cooperation, and conflict resolution. However, he emphasized that as the world has evolved with new aspirations and rising economies, the mechanisms of global governance have remained stagnant.

The Need for Structural Reform

Addressing the limitations of current global bodies, PM Modi stressed that international institutions must adapt to a multipolar world.

"The United Nations and other global institutions have had their historical role, but in the face of today's challenges, their limits are clearly visible. Now new powers are emerging, new voices are demanding their place, and new challenges are demanding new solutions," he said.

India has consistently advocated for comprehensive reforms within the UN Security Council and other international organizations, pointing out that decision-making processes have failed to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. Highlighting the disproportionate management structures, officials have frequently noted that the UN has quadrupled its membership since inception while retaining an outdated leadership framework.

Amplifying the Global South

Emphasizing the imperatives of a reformed global architecture, the Prime Minister called for stronger international cooperation capable of withstanding acute crises while granting a greater voice to the Global South.

"When the reality of the world changes, but the ways of making decisions do not change, the distance between the system and reality starts increasing. This is what we are seeing happening today," he concluded, underscoring that sustainable global peace requires institutions that are representative, inclusive, and responsive to modern challenges.
