Investigation Leads to Shocking Arrest in Kolhapur

In a bizarre twist of crime and audacity, a 19-year-old man in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district has been arrested by local law enforcement for allegedly stealing family gold to finance the purchase of a luxury SUV—only to invite his victim to the vehicle's traditional blessing ceremony.

The accused, identified as Samar Chavan, a resident of Satave village in the Panhala tehsil, allegedly made off with 15 tolas (approximately 174.96 grams) of gold jewellery from his uncle’s residence. According to investigators from the Kodoli police station, Chavan executed the theft roughly a month prior to his apprehension.

The Scheme Unravels

Investigators revealed that Chavan collaborated with a local jeweller, Sangram Babaso More, to liquidate the stolen ornaments. The illicit transaction yielded approximately Rs 10 lakh, funds that the teenager promptly used to purchase a brand-new Mahindra Thar.

The audacity of the crime reached its peak when Chavan brought the vehicle home. In an unbelievable display of bravado, he extended an invitation to his uncle, Umesh Maruti Chavan—whose household bore the brunt of the theft—to perform the traditional puja (blessing ritual) for the new vehicle.

The plot began to unravel when Umesh Chavan searched for his family's gold ornaments to wear for the inauguration ceremony. Discovering the locker empty, the family immediately raised an alarm. Suspicion intensified when they noticed that while Umesh and his wife's jewellery had vanished, the ornaments belonging to Umesh's grandmother, stored in the same vicinity, remained completely untouched.

Police Action and Custody

Two days following the discovery, Umesh Chavan lodged a formal complaint at the Kodoli police station. Local authorities swiftly initiated a probe, focusing on local financial movements and sudden high-value purchases in the area.

As police inquiries closed in on Samar Chavan regarding the sudden influx of cash and his new SUV, the teenager ultimately confessed to the crime. Following the confession, the Kodoli police placed both Samar Chavan and the local jeweller, Sangram More, under formal arrest.

Local authorities have recovered portions of the assets as the investigation continues into the network involved in fencing the stolen gold. The incident has sent shockwaves through Satave village, leaving residents grappling with the brazen nature of the betrayal within the close-knit community.
