Meghalaya Political Crisis: UDP Collapses as Speaker Recognizes Merger of 3 More MLAs with Ruling NPP
The United Democratic Party in Meghalaya has been reduced to a single MLA after the Assembly Speaker formally recognized the merger of three more legislators with the ruling NPP.

Political Landscape Shifts in Meghalaya
The United Democratic Party (UDP)—which emerged as the single-largest political force in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region following the 2023 Assembly elections—has witnessed a dramatic political collapse, leaving party president Metbah Lyngdoh as its sole remaining legislator.
The political realignment gathered definitive momentum when Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma formally recognized the merger of three high-profile UDP legislators with the ruling National People's Party (NPP). This decisive shift elevates the NPP's strength in the state assembly to 36 seats.
Key Defections and Official Recognition
The legislators involved in the latest merger include:
* Paul Lyngdoh representing West Shillong * Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar representing Mawkyrwat * Nujorki Sungoh representing Mowkaiaw
Following the Speaker's formal order, these lawmakers will now occupy seats in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly as official members of the ruling NPP.
The formal transition stems from a communication submitted by the legislators on October 17. The petition affirmed that the lawmakers represented at least two-thirds of the UDP Legislature Party and that the original party apparatus had resolved to merge with the NPP. After rigorous verification of the members' statutory requirements, the Speaker sanctioned the merger under Paragraph 4 of the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution.
Cascading Blows to the Regional Party
This latest development compounds an already severe existential crisis for the regional outfit. Earlier in the month, the Speaker accepted the merger of eight other UDP MLAs with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on October 16.
Combined, these back-to-back legislative realignments have systematically dismantled the UDP Legislature Party, shrinking its numbers from 12 seats down to just one. Political analysts note that the rapid fragmentation deals a devastating blow to the regional party's standing and fundamentally alters the political arithmetic within the Meghalaya legislative framework.
