MCOCA Invoked in High-Profile Shooting Case

Mumbai — In a major development in the investigation of the October 18 firing incident targeting actor Tiger Shroff, Mumbai police have successfully re-arrested all eleven suspects under the stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

The accused were produced before a designated special court on Wednesday, where prosecutors formally sought and secured permission to apply the 1999 anti-organized crime legislation. The invocation of MCOCA significantly raises the legal stakes, making it considerably harder for the accused to secure bail while extending investigative capabilities for law enforcement.

The Incident and Ongoing Investigation

The case stems from an October 18 attack outside a Juhu sports ground, where two armed assailants discharged five rounds at a vehicle carrying the 36-year-old 'Baaghi' actor. While Shroff managed to escape physically unhurt, the gunfire injured his driver and an independent vlogger who was present at the scene.

Investigators have linked the attack to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which openly claimed responsibility for the shooting shortly after it occurred. Authorities have identified jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's close associate, Anil Pandit, as a key wanted suspect currently evading capture.

Of the eleven individuals apprehended thus far, three were tracked down and arrested in Kota, Rajasthan, while the remaining eight were detained across various locations in Delhi and Haryana. All suspects remain in police custody and are scheduled to appear for further remand hearings.

Strict Legal Implications Under MCOCA

The application of MCOCA grants law enforcement expanded powers and tighter control over the judicial proceedings:

* Extended Custody: Police are granted up to 180 days to file a formal chargesheet, doubling the standard 90-day window under ordinary criminal law. * Stricter Bail Conditions: Courts can only grant bail if there are robust, reasonable grounds establishing that the accused are not guilty. * Admissibility of Confessions: Confessions recorded before a police officer of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) rank are legally admissible as evidence in court, unlike standard procedures where only confessions before a magistrate hold weight.

Daily News 365 will continue to follow this developing investigation as law enforcement pursues remaining suspects linked to the organized crime syndicate.
