Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Om Prakash Mathur formally assumed office on Friday, taking the oath as the 29th Governor of Keralam. The solemn swearing-in ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram, attended by senior state officials and dignitaries.

Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice Soumen Sen, administered the oath of office to Mathur. The event commenced with the reading of the official appointment order issued by President Droupadi Murmu, following which Mathur took the oath in Hindi.

Dignitaries Attend Ceremony Amid Opposition Boycott

Chief Minister V D Satheesan, along with several members of his cabinet, was present at the ceremony. Leaders from various political factions also attended the event to witness the transition of power. However, key figures from the opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) chose to stay away, opting not to participate in the proceedings.

The ceremony lasted just over ten minutes and concluded with the playing of the national song and national anthem. Following the formal proceedings, Governor Mathur spent time interacting with the assembled dignitaries.

Political Implications and Background

Mathur succeeds Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who has since been reassigned as the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Political analysts are closely monitoring Mathur's appointment due to ongoing friction between successive state administrations—both past LDF governments and the current United Democratic Front (UDF) government—and previous gubernatorial offices, particularly concerning the administration of state universities.

Under constitutional provisions, the Governor serves as the Chancellor of the state's universities, holding authority over crucial institutional decisions. Previous tenures saw intense political friction and legal battles over the appointment of vice-chancellors and senior academic officials, with opposition parties frequently alleging partisan appointments to key university posts.

A Lifetime in Public Service

Born in Bedal village, Bali tehsil, in Rajasthan's Pali district, Mathur holds a degree from Rajasthan University. He began his long-standing career in public service as a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak. Over the decades, his organizational acumen propelled him to prominent roles within the BJP, including serving as the party's general secretary in charge of Gujarat and representing Rajasthan as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
