Geopolitical Pragmatism and National Interest

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has defended the recent oil agreement between the United States and Russia, asserting that Washington's move underscores the fundamental principle of prioritizing national interest in global trade. Speaking at a prominent international summit in the capital, Jaishankar remarked that a global framework entirely reliant on rigid sanctions is unsustainable in the long run.

"The US does not want its citizens to be harassed. This also demonstrates the importance of protecting one's interests. This is a testament to our position," Jaishankar stated, emphasizing that nations must navigate geopolitical pressures through pragmatic decision-making rather than yielding to pressure politics.

Shifting Global Dynamics

Addressing the evolving nature of international relations, Jaishankar pointed out that multiple Western and European nations continue to procure energy resources from Russia despite sweeping sanctions. He highlighted that establishing global commerce amid restrictive measures requires a clear-eyed focus on domestic economic stability and energy security.

"The reality of the world is that it is shifting and changing. You can't compare it to the old days. That's why everyone is cautious. Everyone is now working on multiple options. No one wants to rely on just one," he observed, describing the current global economic climate as uncertain across energy and financial sectors.

Status of Bilateral Trade Negotiations

Turning to the ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States—widely considered to be in their final stages—Jaishankar urged caution, reminding observers that complex diplomatic pacts are subject to rigorous final-phase hurdles.

Echoing remarks shared by senior economic and diplomatic officials, Jaishankar confirmed that both nations are moving steadily toward a comprehensive agreement. However, he maintained that "it's never done till it's done," noting that negotiators are actively working through the final operational challenges.

When questioned regarding domestic political reactions to his recent meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jaishankar dismissed the criticism with a reference to India's commercial capital, reaffirming the government's standard protocol of engaging foreign counterparts in venues best suited for strategic dialogue.
