Political War of Words Intensifies Over Opposition Leadership

NEW DELHI — Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has launched a sharp counter-offensive against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, rejecting the latter's characterization of Rahul Gandhi as a "failed product." Tharoor maintained that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is intentionally attempting to demonize the opposition leader precisely because his outreach has begun resonating with the country's youth.

Speaking at a prominent public forum in the national capital, Tharoor argued that the ruling establishment's persistent focus on the former Congress president is evidence of political anxiety.

"On the contrary, I can tell you that I think Rahul Gandhi has ignited an enthusiasm, particularly amongst younger voters in the last few months, which I think the BJP would be well advised to sit up and pay attention to," Tharoor stated. "In fact, I suspect it's because they have paid attention to him that they are trying to demonize him in this way."

The remarks follow comments made by Prime Minister Modi, who launched a scathing critique without naming the Congress leader directly. Comparing the frequency of Congress's attempts to relaunch its leader to rocket launches from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, the Prime Minister questioned how long the grand old party would jeopardize national interests for political positioning.

Internal Democracy and Party Unity

Addressing the Prime Minister's assertion that the Nehru-Gandhi family has become a political liability and a "parasite" within the opposition ranks, Tharoor firmly defended the internal democratic framework of the Congress party.

Citing his own political trajectory, Tharoor emphasized that divergent viewpoints are accommodated within the party structure.

"Ours is a party with a tremendous amount of inter-party democracy. Yes, I have expressed views that have sometimes been at variance in my party, but I'm still here," Tharoor noted. Highlighting his role as a parliamentarian and chairperson of a key parliamentary committee, he added that expressing differing perspectives does not make a member a political apostate.

Tharoor also reaffirmed his faith in the ideological foundation of the opposition bloc, asserting that the party remains fully prepared to challenge the incumbent government on a level playing field as India gears up for future electoral battles.
