When Influence Fails: Social Media Star With 2.1 Million Followers Gets Only 33 Votes in Rajasthan Panchayat Polls
A prominent social media influencer with over 2 million followers suffered a massive electoral rout, securing just 33 votes in rural Rajasthan's local elections.

The Reality Check of Grassroots Politics
In an era where digital clout is frequently equated with real-world power, a prominent social media influencer learned a harsh lesson in grassroots democracy. Omprakash Bishnoi, a self-proclaimed astrologer and content creator boasting a combined following of 2.1 million users across Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, suffered a stunning electoral defeat in the recent sarpanch elections.
Bishnoi contested the polls in the Indon Ki Dhani-II gram panchayat, located within the Osian tehsil of Rajasthan's Jodhpur district. Despite extensive digital campaigning and a massive online audience—comprising 1.4 million followers on Instagram, 232,000 on Facebook, and 500,000 on YouTube—he managed to secure only 33 votes in a village with approximately 1,600 eligible voters.
A Three-Way Contest
The local election featured three candidates vying for the position. While Bishnoi's digital metrics soared into the millions, the ground reality proved starkly different. Another candidate, a local teacher, secured 527 votes, while the eventual winner, who operates a car business, clinched the victory.
Reflecting on the unexpected outcome, Bishnoi noted the vast chasm between online popularity and ground-level voter mobilization.
"Social media is one thing, but the situation on the ground is different," Bishnoi said in an interview. "Of my 33 votes, 11 came from my family. The rest came from people who studied with me and were close to me."
Campaign Strategy and Community Priorities
Bishnoi stated that his campaign focused on key rural development issues, including ensuring education for every child in the village, caring for destitute animals, and effectively extending government welfare schemes to local residents. He also highlighted his ongoing philanthropic work, claiming to manage a cow shelter housing 1,500 animals and having donated approximately 30 bighas of his own land for the initiative.
Unlike traditional high-spending campaigns, Bishnoi maintained that he abstained from distributing money or intoxicants to voters and avoided large convoys of vehicles, choosing instead to conduct his outreach using his regular vehicle.
Despite the electoral embarrassment—which included 10 votes going to NOTA (None of the Above)—Bishnoi remains undeterred. Acknowledging that the defeat provided a steep learning curve regarding direct voter engagement, the influencer has vowed to continue his social work and community development efforts in the region.
