Tensions Escalate at SRFTI as Veteran Actor's Remarks Spark Political Firestorm
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah's support for protesting SRFTI students draws fierce political pushback amid campus unrest and administrative measures.

Campus Unrest at SRFTI
The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata has found itself at the center of a national debate following weeks of student protests, administrative crackdowns, and a high-profile political row. The tensions escalated after veteran Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah publicly voiced support for the protesting student body.
According to an official report released by the institute—which operates under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting—recent regulatory measures were implemented strictly to ensure the safety, dignity, and academic continuity of its student population of over 500 individuals.
The Controversy Over Actor's Remarks
In a widely circulated video message, actor Naseeruddin Shah criticized the ruling dispensation, alleging that the administration's actions were part of a political vendetta against dissenting voices following recent electoral outcomes in West Bengal. He praised the students as resilient figures facing systemic pressure.
However, these remarks drew sharp condemnation from political quarters. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and national spokesperson Rahul Sinha strongly contested the actor's narrative, demanding a comprehensive probe into the origins of such statements. Sinha alleged that the intervention was part of a larger, orchestrated conspiracy involving opposition political factions seeking to destabilize democratic institutions.
Institute sources pushed back sharply against the actor's commentary, maintaining that external figures inflaming passions have no stake in the academic future of the campus community and are misleading the public regarding the ground reality.
Escalation of Campus Protests
The friction at SRFTI traces back to late September, when the administration moved to install CCTV cameras across the premises to bolster security. A section of the student body strongly resisted the move, citing privacy concerns, which authorities argued compromised the collective security of the campus.
According to the official timeline detailed in the SRFTI report:
* September 27: Protesting students allegedly barged into the main auditorium during an authorized event, triggering a physical altercation and subsequent property damage. * October 4: Around 250 students reportedly held Vice Chancellor Santosh Ajmera hostage at the main gate until late evening, following weeks of unauthorized marches involving external political agitators. * October 6–8: A group of 50 to 60 students occupied the Vice Chancellor's office for nearly 48 hours, resulting in vandalism and structural damage. * October 15–16: Incidents involving the alleged manhandling of the Vice Chancellor and stone-throwing directed at his office occurred consecutively.
Administrative Response and Disciplinary Action
In response to the mounting security concerns and physical assaults on administrative leadership, the institute administration filed a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals. While bearing hospital expenses for injured students, authorities simultaneously heightened perimeter security, deployed additional personnel, and collaborated with local law enforcement to address safety protocols.
To restore normalcy and safeguard academic standards, SRFTI ultimately rusticated six students for one year due to severe misconduct and suspended regular classes through mid-November. As the institute attempts to re-establish order, the intersection of campus activism and national politics continues to cast a long shadow over the future of film education at the premier institution.
