Tragedy Strikes Jabalpur: Two Dead, Six Injured After Live Wire Falls on Durga Idol Procession
A festive procession in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur turned tragic after a live power line snapped, plunging participants into shock and sparking local protests.

A Festive Celebration Turns Fatal
What began as a joyous culmination of the Navratri festival turned into an unimaginable tragedy in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur district. Two men lost their lives and at least six others sustained severe electric shocks when a live high-tension wire suddenly snapped and fell onto a tractor-trolley carrying a Durga idol.
According to local law enforcement and eyewitness reports gathered by Daily News 365, the horrific incident occurred shortly after midnight at approximately 12:04 AM on Thursday. The procession, comprising more than 50 devoted participants, had set out from Civil Line Path and was en route to the Narili pond for the ceremonial idol immersion.
The Sequence of Events
The tractor-trolley was navigating through the Majhauli police station area—situated roughly 30 kilometers from the district headquarters—when the overhead power line descended unexpectedly onto the vehicle. The sudden electrical discharge instantly engulfed the trolley, trapping the victims before many could react.
Emergency services rushed to the location, transporting the injured to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment. Medical practitioners confirmed that two individuals succumbed to their injuries on the spot, while the remaining six are currently receiving specialized care for electrical burns and shock.
Community Outrage and Protests
In the wake of the disaster, simmering grief quickly transformed into public anger. Local residents and family members of the victims took to the streets on Thursday morning, staging a blockade on a key thoroughfare in Majhauli.
Protesters have demanded immediate accountability from the regional electricity distribution company, pointing toward chronic negligence regarding poorly maintained overhead wiring and delayed safety clearances during major religious festivals. Senior district officials arrived at the scene to negotiate with the agitating crowd, assuring a thorough administrative inquiry and compensation for the affected families.
As the community mourns this devastating loss of life, questions loom large over civic preparedness and electrical infrastructure maintenance during mass public gatherings across the state.
