UP MLC Elections: Samajwadi Party Gains Ground, Delivers Setback to Ruling BJP
The Samajwadi Party made significant gains in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, splitting key seats with the ruling BJP ahead of the assembly polls.

Lucknow Political Shift
In a notable political development just months ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) delivered a strategic setback to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) elections, securing a near even split of the contested seats.
The recent electoral outcome saw the BJP lose crucial strongholds, including the Lucknow Graduates' seat and the Agra Teachers' seat, both captured by Akhilesh Yadav's SP. In the Lucknow Graduates' constituency, SP candidate Kanti Singh Patel unseated the incumbent Awanish Kumar Singh of the BJP. Meanwhile, Akash Agrawal secured a victory for the SP in the Agra Teachers' contest.
Electoral Breakdown
Out of the 11 graduates' and teachers' seats up for grabs, official results for 10 constituencies had been declared late Wednesday evening. The ruling BJP managed to secure six seats, while the Samajwadi Party claimed four. The Varanasi Graduates' constituency witnessed a strong showing by the SP, where their candidate held a commanding lead.
The BJP's victories were concentrated in specific regional strongholds. In the graduates' categories, Dinesh Kumar Goyal won in Meerut, and Manvendra Pratap Singh 'Guru Ji' secured Agra. The party's teacher-representative winners included Umesh Dwivedi in Lucknow, Shrichand Sharma in Meerut, Hari Singh Dhillon in Bareilly-Moradabad, and Dhruv Kumar Tripathi in Gorakhpur-Faizabad.
Beyond Lucknow and Agra, the SP successfully wrested the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates' seat through Man Singh Yadav, while Lal Bihari Yadav secured the Varanasi Teachers' seat with 11,612 votes.
Reactions and Allegations
Commenting on the outcome, former Chief Minister and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav asserted that the electoral results signaled a rejection of the incumbent administration.
"The MLC elections have packed up the BJP's bags and baggage," Yadav stated in a public address.
Furthermore, the opposition leader raised allegations of administrative manipulation and procedural malpractice by the ruling party, specifically targeting the regions of Gorakhpur and Varanasi—areas politically significant as they are represented in the state assembly and parliament by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, respectively.
In the preceding election cycle for these identical 11 seats held in 2020, the BJP had secured six seats, the SP three, and independent candidates accounted for the remaining two. The recent shift underscores an intensifying political contest in the state as parties prepare for the broader legislative assembly elections.
