Dehradun Tensions Ease as Leadership Steps In

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has moved swiftly to put an end to a growing political controversy surrounding Punjabi pop icon Daler Mehndi, opting for a diplomatic approach by citing personal friendships to quell the escalating tensions.

The controversy erupted following an incident at the Kunjapuri fair in New Tehri, where an on-stage confrontation involving state cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal and singer Daler Mehndi went viral on social media, sparking intense public debate and media scrutiny.

Minister Uniyal Doubles Down on Allegations

Speaking to journalists in Dehradun, Narendranagar MLA and cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal defended his controversial on-stage behavior, claiming that he believed the veteran artist was under the influence of an intoxicant when the performance was abruptly halted.

"He was unable to walk. The whole world has seen it in the video. I felt he was under the influence of an intoxicant. As for what that intoxicant was, I could not have had a medical examination done on such a big artist," Uniyal stated during a press briefing.

The minister further questioned the singer's decision to take the stage if he was unwell, emphasizing that public figures bear a responsibility to manage expectations. "The first thing is, he is such a big artist. If his health was not fine, I think he should have declined, saying he could not perform at the Kunjapuri fair," Uniyal added.

Chief Minister Seeks Closure

In stark contrast to his cabinet colleague's sharp remarks, Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami adopted a conciliatory tone during a subsequent press conference, aiming to draw a line under the episode and preserve the state's cultural hospitality.

"Uttarakhand is a land of artists, where everyone is treated with respect. I feel this matter should be put to rest here," Dhami told reporters. Seeking to mend fences, the Chief Minister confirmed that he intends to personally reach out to the performers involved.

"I will speak with Mika and Daler Mehndi; both are good friends of mine," Dhami said. Addressing the pressure faced by local leadership during large public gatherings, he added, "I believe the minister must have been under pressure from the public at that time. The minister himself has stated that he was unaware that Daler Mehndi was unwell."

As political analysts weigh the fallout of the public spat, the administration's dual messaging highlights the delicate balance regional politicians must maintain between public accountability and cultural diplomacy.
