A Decades-Old Investment Pays Off

What started as a cautious collector's foresight in the late 1990s has culminated in a historic windfall. A retired interior decorator from Woking, England, has discovered that his hidden attic stash of Pokémon trading cards is worth a staggering £1.56 million (approximately Rs 19.5 crore).

The collection, meticulously preserved and stored away in the homeowner's attic for 15 years, went under the hammer at Ewbank's auction house in Surrey. According to auctioneers, the sale marks the most valuable trading card transaction ever recorded in the United Kingdom, and potentially sets a new benchmark across Europe.

Treasure Found in the Attic

The anonymous seller admitted he had no inkling of the collection's staggering market value until a local newspaper report caught his eye, detailing the sale of a single rare Pokémon card for upwards of £6,000.

"I know people always talk about finding treasure in the attic, but in my case that is literally true," the seller remarked, reflecting on the discovery.

Recalling the origins of the collection, he explained that his son began collecting and swapping the cards with schoolmates during the height of the late-1990s Pokémon craze. Recognizing the potential longevity of the franchise, the father decided to intervene as a savvy investor.

"He had his own cards to play with, but he never got to touch these, I'm glad to say," the seller noted. Instead, he sourced complete, sealed sets directly from a collector in Malaysia via eBay, filing them into bespoke binders before relegating them to the attic.

Record-Breaking Auction Results

The foresight proved immensely lucrative. A single complete set that the decorator originally purchased for £300 fetched an astonishing £75,000 during the Surrey auction.

Experts note that the trading card market—particularly for vintage, pristine-condition Japanese and English Pokémon sets from the franchise's initial launch era—has exploded exponentially over the past decade, transforming childhood nostalgia into high-stakes alternative investments.
