Shifting Global Dynamics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a sharp critique of the current international architecture on Thursday, asserting that global institutions like the United Nations are struggling to keep pace with a rapidly shifting world order. Speaking at a major international summit in New Delhi, the Prime Minister highlighted that critical domains such as international trade, emerging technologies, and vital sea routes are increasingly being weaponised amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts.

His remarks underscore mounting global concerns regarding supply chain vulnerabilities and economic disruptions caused by escalating conflicts in regions like West Asia.

The Rejection of 'Matsya Nyaya'

Invoking ancient economic philosophy, the Prime Minister referenced the teachings of the historical Indian thinker Chanakya, citing the Sanskrit maxim 'apranitah tu matsyanyayam udbhavayati'. The phrase translates to the 'law of the sea' or the law of the jungle, wherein the strong dominate and consume the weak.

"The world does not need such a situation. It needs a system that stops this 'matsya nyaya' from happening," PM Modi stated, emphasizing India’s proactive stance as a stabilizing force in international affairs. He pointed to India's pandemic response—during which the nation supplied vital medicines and vaccines to over 100 countries—as a practical model of responsible global leadership.

Call for Reform and Global South Representation

Highlighting the imperatives of multilateralism, Modi called for an overhaul of existing global governance structures to grant a stronger, more decisive voice to the Global South.

"The changing world order calls for stronger global institutions, a greater voice for the Global South, and international cooperation that stands firm in times of crisis," he noted.

Addressing the nation's long-term trajectory encapsulated in the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047, Modi emphasized that national development is intrinsically linked with global well-being. "International cooperation isn't just for good times. It must be effective during crises too. India is strengthening its own capabilities to help strengthen the world," he concluded.
