India Accelerates Push as Global Research Superpower with Deep Science Focus
Top scientific and academic leaders outline India's strategic push in deep science, advanced materials, and AI integration to emerge as a global innovation powerhouse.

Strategic Push for Scientific Autonomy
India is aggressively scaling its scientific research and innovation ecosystem by heavily investing in deep science, emerging technologies, and robust collaborations between academic institutions and industries. Experts speaking at a major global policy and technology summit in New Delhi emphasized that targeted financial backing and cross-sector partnerships are vital for positioning the nation as a premier research superpower.
Leading the discourse, Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, CEO of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), detailed the institution's expanding portfolio. He revealed that ANRF currently supports over 100 strategic research projects aimed at strengthening the country's foundational scientific capabilities. According to Kalyanaraman, the focus must shift toward cultivating indigenous technology models rather than relying on existing global frameworks.
Fostering Deep Tech and Advanced Materials
The national research strategy places a heavy emphasis on deep-technology sectors, including two-dimensional materials, advanced manufacturing composites, and artificial intelligence-driven engineering. Kalyanaraman noted that platforms like AI Surreal are streamlining research methodologies, making complex scientific data significantly more accessible to domestic innovators.
Furthermore, the initiative prioritizes translational research tailored to domestic and international markets, particularly within affordable healthcare and educational technology. Policymakers argue that creating a seamless pipeline from academic discovery to commercial application will attract top-tier global talent back to Indian institutions.
Aerospace and High-Speed Flight Horizons
Academic leaders echoed optimism regarding the changing landscape of domestic research funding. Professor Duvvuri Subrahmanyam, an aerospace engineering expert from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), highlighted the transformative impact of the ANRF framework on specialized scientific disciplines.
Subrahmanyam pointed to high-speed flight research—a highly specialized domain pursued by only a handful of nations globally—as a prime area where Indian scientists and engineers can carve out a distinct technological advantage. With expanded funding and structured industry partnerships, India's research community aims to deliver breakthrough innovations with profound global applications.
