India Targets 2028 Launch for Locally Designed and Branded Smartphones: IT Minister
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India will roll out entirely indigenous, locally designed and branded smartphones by October 2028.

A Milestone for Domestic Tech Manufacturing
India is on track to introduce its first fully indigenous, domestically designed, and branded smartphones by October 2028, Union Minister for Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced during a prominent policy summit in New Delhi.
Speaking at the event, Vaishnaw outlined the aggressive technological roadmap and emphasized the immense progress India's engineering sector has made over the past few years. "Please note it: 23 October 2028. You will have Indian-designed, Indian-manufactured, Indian-branded mobile phones," the Minister stated.
Highlighting the intricate engineering challenges involved in modern mobile device development, Vaishnaw illustrated the physical complexities by pointing to the dense array of components packed into a smartphone's hardware architecture—including radio frequency communications, compute units, memory, antenna systems, and power management modules.
Overcoming Engineering Complexities
The Minister pointed to a significant milestone achieved three years ago when the government issued a design challenge to domestic engineers to develop printed circuit boards (PCBs)—the core motherboard of a smartphone.
According to Vaishnaw, two domestic firms successfully took up the challenge. One company's design met rigorous industry standards and was subsequently selected by a major United States telecommunication service provider. The firm successfully delivered a 5G-capable mobile device that is currently manufactured and distributed to American consumers.
"That capability we have been able to develop over the last few years, and that capability is now available for us," Vaishnaw said. "Now we will use that capability to have the Indian brand, Indian design, and Indian IP retained in India."
Economic Shift and Manufacturing Growth
Reflecting on the broader macroeconomic environment, the Minister attributed the rapid rise of India's electronics manufacturing sector to policy reforms enacted under the current administration, contrasting it with historical regulatory frameworks.
Vaishnaw noted that electronics have rapidly climbed to become one of India's top exported goods, pointing to broader industrial expansion that now encompasses advanced manufacturing across multiple high-tech sectors, including drones, defense equipment, and transportation infrastructure.
