Diplomatic Momentum at the World Summit

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that the long-anticipated bilateral trade deal between India and the United States has entered its "last mile," though he cautioned that the final hurdles must still be cleared by negotiating teams.

Speaking at a high-profile global summit in New Delhi, Jaishankar noted that optimism surrounding the pact is shared by top officials on both sides, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

"What you've heard not just from Secretary Rubio, but from Minister Piyush Goyal, from others, from me, is that we are moving towards it. But, as I said, often the last mile or the penultimate miles do pose their challenges. I think the negotiating teams are working through them now," Jaishankar said during a moderated session.

When pressed on the specifics of the remaining sticking points, the External Affairs Minister maintained discretion, emphasizing that the resolution of technical details remains strictly within the purview of the respective trade delegations.

High-Level Engagement in Mumbai

Jaishankar's remarks follow a series of intensive diplomatic engagements in Mumbai, where he hosted Secretary Rubio during the senior US diplomat's second official visit to India in under five months. The visit underscored both nations' commitment to smoothing out lingering differences over tariffs, agricultural market access, industrial goods, and regulatory frameworks.

US President Donald Trump has also recently characterized the prospective agreement as "pretty close," signaling a strong political will from the White House to finalize the framework.

Ahead of the Mumbai discussions, Rubio publicly described India as a major crude-oil refining powerhouse, advocating for increased processing capabilities for Venezuelan crude. The US Secretary of State's itinerary included a site visit to the Jamnagar Refinery, highlighting the expanding energy partnership between the two economies.

Broadening Strategic Alignment

Beyond trade, discussions between Jaishankar and Rubio encompassed a wide array of strategic and geopolitical issues, including regional security developments in West Asia, defense manufacturing cooperation, and advanced technology transfers.

According to readout statements from the US State Department, expanded energy trade is viewed as a transformative catalyst for diversifying supply chains while satisfying India's growing domestic energy demand. Furthermore, Washington has expressed strong support for bolstering bilateral defense ties, civil nuclear cooperation, and the adoption of advanced American technological systems to secure mutual strategic objectives.

As the negotiating teams work through the final procedural and substantive details, both governments anticipate being in a position to present a finalized trade framework for formal leadership approval in the near future.
