Flight Suspensions Extended Amid Security Alerts

Indian carrier IndiGo has officially announced an extension of its flight cancellations to and from Saudi Arabia through late October, following heightened security concerns across the region. The directive, confirmed by the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, comes in the wake of escalating drone and missile strikes targeting critical infrastructure in the Kingdom.

According to the updated mission advisory, flights connecting to Riyadh will remain suspended until October 31, while services to and from Jeddah, Dammam, and Madinah are grounded through October 27.

Regional Escalation and Impact on Citizens

The airspace and security disruptions follow a series of aerial attacks directed at airports and energy installations, attributed to Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement. Recent security incidents have directly impacted Indian expatriates living and working in the region, prompting urgent diplomatic interventions and safety warnings.

The Indian Embassy has reiterated safety advisories for the approximately 2.74 million Indian nationals residing in Saudi Arabia, urging them to remain vigilant, adhere strictly to local security instructions, and seek shelter during aerial interception alerts. Furthermore, authorities have cautioned expatriates against capturing or circulating digital media of interception sites or military impacts, citing strict legal repercussions under Saudi jurisdiction.

Multi-Airline Curtailment and Repatriation Efforts

IndiGo is not alone in scaling back operations. Other major Indian operators, including Air India, Air India Express, and Akasa Air, have previously instituted sweeping suspensions across their respective Saudi routes through late October.

The widespread grounding has notably affected Indian Umrah pilgrims currently stranded in the region. In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stepped up coordination efforts. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that both the embassy in Riyadh and the consulate in Jeddah are actively engaging with airlines and regional tour operators to facilitate the prompt and safe repatriation of affected travelers.

For citizens requiring urgent departure, diplomatic missions have advised exploring transit options via neighboring Gulf states such as Bahrain, Kuwait, or Qatar, contingent upon acquiring valid entry documentation. Dedicated 24-hour control rooms and volunteer support networks remain active to assist distressed nationals on the ground.
