Security Lockdown Imposed Ahead of National Elections

TEL AVIV — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered an immediate cordon around Hebron and prepared for a comprehensive lockdown across the West Bank following a morning shooting attack that left five Israelis wounded.

The incident, which unfolded at the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint near Hebron, involved two armed assailants who engaged Israeli security forces in a prolonged firefight before being shot and killed. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), soldiers rushed to the Judea Junction area after the initial assault, successfully neutralizing the attackers and recovering a large quantity of ammunition from their vehicle.

Magen David Adom, Israel's emergency medical rescue service, reported that five individuals sustained injuries during the attack, with two victims in critical condition, including a man in his early twenties suffering from severe gunshot wounds.

Political Fallout and Regional Reactions

The violent escalation comes at a politically sensitive time, occurring just days before Israel's tightly contested national elections on Tuesday. In response to the security breach, Prime Minister Netanyahu announced the immediate cancellation of all political campaign meetings.

"I salute the courage of our soldiers who acted with determination and prevented what could have been a major attack," Netanyahu said in an official statement. "I have instructed the IDF and security forces to impose an immediate cordon on the city of Hebron and to prepare for a full lockdown of all of Judea and Samaria starting today."

Netanyahu also directed stern warnings toward militant factions, vowing that security forces would pursue Hamas operatives relentlessly.

Meanwhile, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir called for more aggressive measures, demanding the complete dismantling and demilitarization of the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority. However, security officials noted no evidence linking the Palestinian Authority—the governing body in the Israeli-occupied West Bank—to Friday's attack.

Hamas Praises Operation

While stopping short of claiming direct responsibility, Hamas issued a statement praising the shooting near Hebron as an "exceptional heroic operation" and described it as a natural response to ongoing military actions in the region.

The heightened security measures and ongoing military sweeps in the West Bank underscore mounting tensions as political leaders across the spectrum address the security lapse ahead of Tuesday's crucial vote.
