Seismic Activity Rocks the Himalayan Region

A series of powerful earthquakes struck Tibet on Thursday, compounding a region already reeling from severe natural disasters earlier in the season. According to data released by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the seismic activity involved multiple tremors occurring within a short span of time.

The primary tremor, registering at a heavy magnitude of 7, hit the region at approximately 8:03 pm Indian Standard Time (IST). The epicenter was located roughly 489 kilometers north-north-west of Pandin in Arunachal Pradesh, at a considerable depth of 173 kilometers.

Subsequent Tremors and Regional Impact

Just minutes after the initial major quake, a second tremor measuring magnitude 5 struck the same general area at 8:42 pm IST. NCS data indicated this follow-up quake occurred at a shallower depth of 15 kilometers, roughly 323 kilometers north-north-west of Basar in Arunachal Pradesh.

In addition to these events, a third tremor measuring magnitude 5.2 was recorded in neighboring parts of China at 8:29 pm IST, positioned roughly 505 kilometers north-north-west of Arunachal Pradesh's Pangin at a depth of 15 kilometers.

Compounding Vulnerabilities

These sudden earthquakes arrive just weeks after a catastrophic wave of flash floods and landslides devastated the Nepal-Tibet border region in August. Those earlier floods claimed more than 1,400 lives, sweeping away homes and infrastructure across northern and central Nepal. Authorities and disaster response teams remain on high alert as the region contends with this fresh geological emergency.
