One Dead, Three Missing After Suspected Drone Strike on Cargo Vessel in Black Sea
A Comoros-registered cargo ship was struck off the coast of Romania in the Black Sea, leaving one crew member dead and three missing amidst rising regional security tensions.

Maritime Tragedy in the Black Sea
BUCHAREST — A rescue operation was launched off the coast of Romania on Friday following a suspected drone strike on a merchant vessel in the Black Sea. The incident, which left one crew member dead and three others missing, marks the latest escalation in a troubling series of attacks impacting commercial shipping in the region.
The Comoros-registered cargo ship Khoryv issued an emergency distress signal at approximately 10:00 am local time (0700 GMT) while positioned 13 nautical miles off the major Romanian port city of Constanta. According to Romanian maritime authorities, the vessel's 13-member crew consisted of 10 Ukrainian nationals and three Azerbaijani nationals.
Rescue Operations Hampered by Weather
Romanian naval rescue vessels mobilized immediately to the coordinates provided by the distress signal. Authorities confirmed that nine crew members were pulled from the water alive, alongside the recovery of one body.
"Rescue vessels have managed to recover nine people alive, and one body from the water," the Romanian Naval Authority said in an official statement.
Efforts to locate the remaining three missing crew members faced severe obstacles. Officials noted that adverse weather conditions and severely impaired visibility precluded any aerial deployment of rescue helicopters, forcing responders to rely entirely on surface vessels.
Escalating Threats to Regional Navigation
The incident underscores a dangerous maritime spillover from the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Over the past three weeks, an increasing number of merchant vessels navigating Black Sea shipping lanes near Romania and Bulgaria have been targeted by suspected drone strikes.
Just days prior, the chemical tanker Wine Trader caught fire off the Romanian coast following a drone attack, resulting in seven missing crew members. Romanian President Nicusor Dan has strongly condemned the assaults, calling the ongoing threats to commercial navigation "unacceptable."
NATO Bolsters Regional Defenses
In response to the deteriorating security situation, NATO announced this week that it is deploying additional surveillance aircraft, drones, and advanced radar systems to the Black Sea theater.
The developments prompted Romania's Supreme Council for National Defence to convene an emergency session. Following the meeting, the presidency released a statement emphasizing that "threats to freedom of navigation and critical infrastructure have increased significantly."
As a frontline NATO member sharing a border with Ukraine, Romania is urgently pursuing the accelerated development of its maritime surveillance capabilities, enhanced mine countermeasures, and robust defense systems to neutralize unauthorized drone incursions into its national airspace and territorial waters.
