Central Bank Focuses on Market Stability Over Fixed Valuations

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) does not target specific price levels when managing the rupee's valuation against the US dollar, according to central bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra. Speaking at a prominent economic summit in the capital, Malhotra emphasized that the institution's primary objective in the foreign exchange market is maintaining orderly conditions rather than defending a rigid exchange rate.

"We do not target any price or level for the rupee, but, at the same time, it has been our endeavour that we ensure orderly market conditions in the forex markets," Malhotra stated during an interactive session. He added that the central bank remains vigilant against speculative behavior and excessive volatility, deploying necessary interventions when market disruptions occur.

Navigating Forex Pressures and Macroeconomic Fundamentals

The Governor's remarks come amid recent currency fluctuations that saw the rupee approach historical lows near 97 against the dollar before staging a recovery over several consecutive sessions. Political discourse has intensified around the currency's trajectory over the past decade, with government officials attributing recent depreciation primarily to external macroeconomic headwinds, including geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Highlighting broader economic indicators, Malhotra pointed to India's robust quarterly GDP growth rate of 7.8 percent as evidence of solid fundamental economic health.

Inflation Dynamics and Monetary Policy Outlook

Addressing domestic price pressures, the RBI chief acknowledged that inflation remains elevated but assured that it stays within the central bank's tolerance thresholds.

* Long-Term Average: Malhotra noted that India maintained an average inflation rate of 4.7 percent over the past decade. * Comparative Metric: This marks a decline from the 7.4 percent average recorded during the preceding four-year period. * Current Projections: Supply-side pressures originating primarily from food and fuel sectors have prompted the central bank to revise its average inflation projection for the current fiscal year upward to 5.1 percent.

Credible monetary policy operations have successfully anchored inflation relative to historical highs, ensuring that broader economic growth remains insulated from external supply shocks.
