Parliament Lacks Efficiency, Says Senior Lawmaker

Senior Congress leader and Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor, has candidly described the national legislature as "dysfunctional," stating that the house often falls short of fulfilling its comprehensive democratic mandate.

Speaking at a high-profile public policy summit, the veteran parliamentarian engaged in a wide-ranging, rapid-fire discussion covering contemporary politics, legislative decorum, and cultural shifts.

Reflections on Parliamentary Debates and Leadership

When queried about contemporary legislative speeches, Tharoor expressed a desire for more frequent parliamentary interventions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Highlighting the Prime Minister's extensive engagement on international parliamentary platforms, Tharoor suggested that domestic proceedings would benefit from his regular participation.

Turning to his own political camp, Tharoor praised first-term parliamentarian Priyanka Gandhi, noting her fluency and effectiveness at the podium.

Characterizing his political party as inherently "aspirational," Tharoor defined its core mission: "Aspiring for power and working for the aspirations of the other."

The Power of Gen-Z Humour in Politics

Addressing cultural changes in modern political discourse, Tharoor revealed a surprising familiarity with youth lexicon, citing "delulu"—a colloquial term for delusional—as his favourite Gen-Z slang. He applied the term critically to government stances while commending the younger generation for utilizing satire, memes, and humour during public demonstrations.

"Humour can deflate the most arrogant, most pompous balloon that there is out there in politics," Tharoor remarked, reflecting on his own early experiences learning to navigate the complexities of a multilingual democracy.

Personal Preferences and Global Influences

Addressing lighter cultural queries, the veteran politician clarified his dietary habits, confirming he follows a vegetarian lifestyle. On the ongoing debate regarding the official nomenclature of Kerala versus Keralam, Tharoor noted that while he historically preferred the traditional English usage, he acknowledges the constitutional and legal adoption of Keralam.

Reflecting on international mentorship, Tharoor cited former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan as a profound influence. Working closely with Annan taught him the importance of maintaining integrity under pressure and staying grounded in personal convictions amidst external political scrutiny.
