Controversy Surrounds Congressional Hopeful

Texas Republican congressional candidate Brandon Herrera is facing severe public backlash following the resurfacing of a video clip in which he makes racially charged remarks regarding unadopted shelter animals. Herrera, a prominent firearms YouTuber widely known online as "The AK Guy," is running for the United States House of Representatives in Texas' 23rd Congressional District.

The controversy stems from a previous appearance on The Josie Show, a podcast hosted by Josie Glabach. During the episode, Glabach discussed adopting a kitten and later taking in its three siblings to prevent them from being euthanized.

"I hate to see animals put down for no reason," Herrera remarked during the broadcast, before adding: "Like, the very bare minimum, they could at least collaborate with the local Chinese restaurant and some sort of like... don't let it go to waste, you know?"

The comments immediately drew sharp criticism from viewers and advocacy groups for invoking harmful, long-standing racist tropes regarding Chinese people and the consumption of domestic pets.

A History of Provocative Statements

This incident marks the latest in a series of controversial remarks by the congressional hopeful. In a 2023 campaign video, Herrera asserted that a firearms training dummy's empty head was "full of mush, much like the average Austin feminist." In a separate 2024 video, he compared the weight of critics he labeled "angry blue-haired" feminists to that of orca whales and elephants.

Despite the recurring controversies, Herrera—a self-described Second Amendment activist—secured a key endorsement from President Donald Trump for the upcoming November election after his primary opponent exited the race amid an ethics investigation.

Political Implications

President Trump lauded Herrera's candidacy in a statement shared on social media, emphasizing his alignment with the Make America Great Again agenda.

"Brandon is strongly supported by many Highly Respected MAGA Warriors in Texas, and Republicans in the US House," Trump wrote. "As your next Congressman, he will work tirelessly to advance our MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN Agenda."

The endorsement highlights the ongoing tension within local and national politics as candidates navigate controversial past statements while attempting to secure voter support in a tightly contested congressional district.
