Tragedy in Karak: Seven Killed and Dozens Injured in Armed Attack on Jordanian Church
Gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in southern Jordan, leaving seven dead and 34 wounded as authorities launch a high-speed manhunt.

Deadly Attack Shakes Southern Jordan
AMMAN — A wave of grief and shock has gripped the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan following a devastating shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in the historic city of Karak. The attack, which unfolded on Friday during a funeral service, claimed the lives of seven individuals and left 34 others wounded, local authorities confirmed.
The incident took place in Karak, located approximately 180 kilometers (110 miles) south of the capital, Amman. According to preliminary details and state television footage, the assault was executed by multiple armed assailants who brazenly approached the house of worship before opening indiscriminate fire on the gathered mourners.
Security Response and Official Investigation
Jordanian state broadcaster footage captured harrowing moments of the assault, showing two initial gunmen armed with pistols advancing on the church, followed by a third assailant wielding a semiautomatic rifle. All three suspects subsequently breached the perimeter toward the structure.
A formal government statement confirmed that the attack was carried out by unknown perpetrators. While officials have not yet officially confirmed whether any of the gunmen have been apprehended or neutralized, security agencies have assured the public that a rigorous, full-speed investigation is underway.
At a press briefing, Jordan's Director of Public Security, Maj. Gen. Obeidallah Maaytah, updated the nation on the status of the victims, noting that 27 of the wounded remain hospitalized and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Highest-Level Condemnations and Historical Context
King Abdullah II took to social media platform X to issue a fierce condemnation of the violence, vowing that the Jordanian state will confront the perpetrators with the harshest legal penalties available.
"Jordan will confront the terrorist act that targeted Karak with the harshest penalties," King Abdullah stated, extending his deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and wishing a swift recovery to the injured.
Karak, a city renowned for its vibrant minority Christian population and deep historical heritage, has faced security challenges before. In 2016, the city was rocked by a series of coordinated militant ambushes—including an attack near the popular Crusader castle—which left 10 people dead, including seven security officers, before security forces intervened and eliminated the attackers after an extended standoff.
As security forces ramp up patrols and intelligence operations across the southern governorate, the nation mourns yet another tragedy targeting a place of peace and communal mourning.
