Comprehensive Health Infrastructure for Delhi Students

In a decisive move to bolster student welfare, the Delhi government has announced plans to set up dedicated first-aid medical facilities in all 1,086 government-run schools operating under the Directorate of Education. Backed by an estimated annual financial outlay of Rs 48.87 crore, the initiative seeks to ensure immediate basic healthcare access for students during school hours.

Education Minister Ashish Sood unveiled the rollout plan, highlighting the administration's commitment to creating a secure and supportive learning environment in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

"Every child in our government schools deserves a safe and caring environment. When a student falls sick or gets hurt during school hours, parents and teachers should have peace of mind knowing that immediate first aid and proper care are readily available right inside the school campus," Sood stated.

Scope of Medical Care and Staffing

Under this initiative, each school will be equipped with a functional medical room staffed by a trained health professional, such as an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) or a multipurpose health worker.

According to official guidelines, these medical rooms are intended strictly for primary basic care and emergency stabilization. The facilities will handle:

* Minor physical injuries and wound dressings * Administration of oral rehydration solution (ORS) for dehydration and fatigue * Supervised temporary rest for students experiencing dizziness or sudden discomfort

Officials emphasized that the medical rooms will not provide diagnostic testing or prescriptive pharmaceutical treatments.

Phased Implementation and Menstrual Health Support

The infrastructure rollout will be executed in a phased manner. Schools already possessing dedicated vacant rooms will be prioritized, followed by institutions where alternative rooms or specialized porta-cabins will be constructed to accommodate the medical units.

Crucially, the initiative also incorporates provisions for adolescent health by offering a private, secure space for female students to address menstrual hygiene and related needs, fostering greater inclusivity and comfort on campus.
