Investigation Underway in North 24 Parganas

Tension gripped West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district following the tragic discovery of a 17-year-old girl's body near a relative's residence in Gaighata. Local authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation and detained a relative as a primary suspect in the ongoing probe.

According to the initial findings from the Gaighata Police Station, the victim's body bore conditions that led investigators to suspect a heinous crime involving sexual assault and murder. However, senior district police officials emphasized that the exact cause of death and confirmation of sexual assault will only be definitively established following the completion of the official post-mortem examination.

Timeline of Events

Family members and local accounts indicate that the victim had left her home on Saturday evening to attend a local musical programme held in the vicinity. The event continued late into the night.

According to the victim's relatives, she received a phone call around midnight while at the venue, after which she abruptly left and failed to return home. Initial concerns arose when her phone remained unreachable, which family members initially attributed to potential local network congestion.

Her body was discovered on Sunday morning in the area situated directly behind a relative's residence.

Law Enforcement and Political Response

Local law enforcement agencies are exploring all angles, including the possibility of multiple perpetrators. Given the district's geographic proximity to the international border, investigators are also probing whether any potential suspects may have attempted to cross into neighboring Bangladesh.

Local political figures, including Gaighata legislator Subrata Thakur, visited the site to express condolences and assure the grieving family of administrative support. Authorities confirmed that a formal legal case has been registered under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, as the inquiry proceeds.
