Political Firestorm Erupts Over Jammu and Kashmir

Veteran politician and National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah has drawn severe criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following controversial remarks regarding Pakistan and the status of Kashmiris. Speaking at a workers' convention in Baramulla, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister claimed that the Indian government's intentions toward Kashmiris were "not right" and credited Pakistan's diplomatic efforts for amplifying the voices of the region internationally.

Abdullah asserted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir retain a distinct identity largely because Pakistan consistently raises the unresolved Kashmir issue at global forums. "They (the Indian state) are silent today due to pressure from the world. Our neighbour goes everywhere and says that the Kashmir issue has not been resolved. They are protecting us. Otherwise, their intentions are not right," Abdullah stated.

BJP Accuses Abdullah of 'Sedition'

Reacting sharply to the remarks, senior BJP leaders condemned the statements as seditious and fundamentally aligned with anti-national narratives. Ravinder Raina, BJP national executive member and former state chief, argued that the comments justified legal action under sedition laws.

"His statement is highly condemnable, very unfortunate and comes under sedition charges. How can Pakistan, an enemy country, be the protector of the people of Kashmir? Pakistan is a murderer of the people of Kashmir," Raina remarked.

Other BJP figures echoed these condemnations. National spokesperson RP Singh advised the veteran leader to examine the socio-economic progress in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370, pointing to high tourist inflows and economic development as proof of integration and stability. Yamini Sharma, a member of the BJP national council, further accused the National Conference of acting as a mouthpiece for Islamabad, ignoring the heavy toll exacted by cross-border terrorism in the valley.

Ally Response and Silence from Omar Abdullah

Meanwhile, the Congress party—which provides legislative backing to the NC-led administration in Jammu and Kashmir—distanced itself from the remarks. Party representatives noted that Abdullah was likely expressing a personal viewpoint and emphasized that India would reject any external interference in its internal affairs.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who assumed office in 2024, has yet to issue a public statement regarding his father's controversial assertions. The central government maintains its firm stance that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India, consistently accusing Islamabad of fostering terrorism and instability in the Union territory.
