Devastating Overnight Blaze

A massive fire tore through the bustling Shiv Market near the Jammu Railway Station late Sunday night, completely destroying between 35 and 40 shops and leaving local traders facing catastrophic financial losses. The blaze erupted at approximately 10:30 PM, triggering immediate panic in the area as towering flames and thick plumes of smoke engulfed the commercial hub.

Emergency services were rushed to the scene, but battling the inferno proved to be an uphill task. Firefighting operations continued uninterrupted for nearly eight hours before crews finally managed to bring the raging fire under control. While the exact trigger remains under official investigation, preliminary assessments by authorities point toward a suspected electrical short circuit.

Logistical Challenges Hamper Operations

Firefighting efforts faced severe operational hurdles due to the topography of the area. The extremely narrow approach roads leading into Shiv Market restricted the movement of standard fire tenders, forcing emergency response teams to improvise and access the seat of the fire from the rear side. This tactical adjustment proved critical in containing the spread of the flames and preventing the disaster from spilling over into adjacent residential and commercial zones.

The market, known for housing a diverse range of micro-businesses including dry fruit shops, blanket stores, dhabas, and local eateries, was gutted within minutes. Despondent traders stood by helplessly as decades of hard work and inventory were reduced to charred rubble.

"We have lost everything in a matter of hours," said Girdhari, one of the visibly shaken shopkeepers whose establishment was completely destroyed.

Administration Promises Swift Relief

Offering a rare silver lining amidst the widespread destruction, local officials confirmed that no casualties or serious injuries were reported, largely due to the late hour of the incident when most shops were locked and unoccupied.

On Monday morning, high-ranking civil administration officials, including Divisional Commissioner Jammu Vikas Kundal, accompanied by local MLA Vikram Randhawa, visited the disaster site to take stock of the situation and review ongoing debris-clearance operations.

The Jammu administration has assured the affected business community of a transparent and expedited assessment of damages by revenue department officials. Authorities have confirmed that financial compensation and rehabilitation assistance will be disbursed swiftly under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) alongside other applicable government welfare schemes to help traders rebuild their livelihoods.
