Tragedy in Northeast Delhi: Father and Son Die After Building Slabs Collapse in Harsh Vihar
A father and son lost their lives after structural slabs collapsed in northeast Delhi, prompting a 14-hour rescue operation by the NDRF and local authorities.

Delhi Building Collapse Claims Two Lives
A devastating structural collapse in northeast Delhi's Harsh Vihar area has claimed the lives of a 60-year-old man and his 33-year-old son. The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening in the Milan Garden locality, has reignited serious concerns regarding illegal unauthorized construction and building safety regulations across the national capital, coming mere weeks after a similar fatal tragedy in Satya Niketan.
The victims, identified as Chanderpal (60) and Vijay Kumar (33), were trapped under heavy debris when multiple concrete slabs caved in. Despite swift mobilization by emergency responders, both men succumbed to their injuries before they could be successfully revived at a nearby hospital.
14-Hour Rescue Operation
According to the Delhi Fire Services, distress calls regarding the cave-in were logged at approximately 6:46 pm on Sunday. Five fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the site, triggering a massive, coordinated search and rescue operation.
The multi-agency effort saw personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, local police units, Civil Defence, and local residents working tirelessly through the night. Divisional Fire Officer Ravinder Singh confirmed that rescue teams battled precarious conditions to clear the wreckage, continuing their exhaustive operations for nearly 14 hours before standing down as a precautionary measure.
Unauthorized Construction Under Scanner
Preliminary investigations and statements from local law enforcement indicate that the ill-fated structure, owned by one Manoj Kumar, originally comprised a single-storey building with a godown operating on the ground floor.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Lamba revealed that unauthorized construction work was actively underway to add an extra floor to the aging structure. Witnesses and initial official assessments suggest that workers were attempting to install a new lintel when the weight caused the upper and lower slabs to structurally fail, bringing the entire overhead floor crashing down into the godown space below.
Senior political figures, including Delhi Ministers Kapil Mishra and Ashish Sood, rushed to the site on Sunday evening to personally oversee rescue logistics and coordinate disaster response agencies. Authorities have assured the public that a thorough, independent investigation will be launched to determine accountability and penalize any violations of municipal construction laws.
