Nashville Execution Protocols Under Scrutiny

New court documents filed in Tennessee reveal that execution team members struggled extensively to establish working intravenous lines before attempting to execute Christa Pike, warning that several of her veins may have ruptured or "blown" during the procedure.

Pike, 50, survived two doses of pentobarbital during the September 30 execution attempt for the 1995 murder of classmate Colleen Slemmer. The new details, submitted by attorney Randy Spivey, offer the most comprehensive account to date of the severe complications that occurred inside the execution chamber.

A Frustrating Ordeal in the Chamber

According to the legal filing, the execution team began attempting to place the required two IV lines at 6:34 p.m. Over the course of the preparation, the team went through approximately 10 needles and tested multiple sites on both of Pike's arms. At one point, Pike reportedly assisted the team by advising them to check her upper arms for viable veins.

While an IV in her right arm was established within six minutes, securing the second line in her left arm took nearly an hour. The filing notes that Pike winced and grimaced as technicians manipulated the needles.

At 6:57 p.m., a team member expressed concern that a vein was "blowing," while others struggled to distinguish between blood return and a compromised vessel. After attempting a different site, technicians pulled out a needle that appeared severely bent. Ultimately, at 7:13 p.m., the team deemed the left arm IV successful and hooked Pike up to monitoring equipment.

Medical Aftermath and Legal Challenges

Following the administration of two doses of pentobarbital—a protocol triggered when the first dose fails to cause death—Pike did not succumb immediately. Instead, she was rushed to a hospital, placed on a ventilator for several days, and eventually regained consciousness before returning to prison.

The incident has intensified scrutiny over Tennessee's lethal injection procedures. The revelations emerged as part of a broader legal challenge by death row inmates contesting the state's execution methods.

"Our predictions about the likelihood of botched executions have come true—and will continue to come true—without substantial change," said Kit Thomas, an attorney representing the death row plaintiffs.
