Unexpected Departure Amid Legal Scrutiny

Defeated right-wing presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro has left Brazil for the United States, circumventing a judicial order barring him from exiting the country, according to international media reports. The 45-year-old senator's sudden departure follows his defeat in Sunday's presidential runoff election against incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro, the son of jailed former leader Jair Bolsonaro, faces ongoing investigations regarding corruption and money laundering allegations. With his electoral loss, he is also set to forfeit his parliamentary immunity, intensifying the legal pressures surrounding him.

Major news organizations including CNN and the Washington Post reported his arrival in the United States, citing anonymous sources, though his specific landing location remains undisclosed. Meanwhile, the US State Department stated it would issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family without officially confirming his travel itinerary.

Canceled Passports and Dual Nationality

A police source speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed that the senator's Brazilian and diplomatic passports have been officially canceled. The source added that there is currently no formal immigration record of Flavio Bolsonaro departing the country through standard legal channels. However, documentation from the Italian parliament indicates that he has held Italian citizenship since 2023.

Campaign officials expressed surprise at the developments. Rogerio Marinho, Bolsonaro's campaign manager, told reporters in Brasilia that the campaign had no prior knowledge of his whereabouts, noting a brief text message in which Bolsonaro stated he would remain out of contact temporarily before addressing supporters.

Political Fallout and Official Reactions

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva strongly condemned the departure during remarks in Brasilia. "A person who sneaks out of their country must have something to hide. The act of leaving Brazil is shameful," Lula stated.

Prior to his departure, Bolsonaro had dismissed the judicial travel restrictions as a politically motivated scare tactic, declaring in a social media video that he had no intention of fleeing the nation. His defense team and political allies maintain that the ongoing legal challenges are politically driven.

The situation draws parallels to the actions of his father, Jair Bolsonaro, who departed Brazil on the eve of Lula's 2023 inauguration following his own electoral defeat. As Brazilian authorities coordinate legal and investigative responses, the Supreme Court has additionally ordered police to examine potential foreign funding and international interference targeting Flavio Bolsonaro's recent campaign.
