Market Corrections Bring Indian Equities Closer to Fair Value, But Selectivity Remains Key
A sharp correction from September peaks has eased Indian stock valuations, prompting analysts to urge strategic stock-picking over broad-based buying.

Shifting Valuations in Indian Equities
Indian stock markets have undergone a significant correction from their September 2024 peaks, recalibrating valuations to levels that present more favorable entry points for long-term investors. However, financial analysts caution that a lower share price alone does not automatically translate to a bargain, emphasizing the need for rigorous stock selection amid lingering macroeconomic headwinds.
The MSCI India 12-month forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has retreated sharply from 24.5 times in September 2024 to approximately 18.5 times—its lowest reading since May 2020. Despite this compression, Indian equities continue to trade at a notable premium relative to their emerging-market counterparts. Broad index metrics highlight the scale of the adjustment, with the Nifty 50 forward valuations correcting by roughly 31 percent, while mid-cap segments have experienced a 36 percent decline from their record highs.
Large-Caps Near Fair Value; Broader Market Requires Caution
Market experts note that large-cap equities are currently hovering near fair value, whereas the broader mid-cap and small-cap landscapes demand heightened selectivity. Analysts point out that the fundamental question facing investors is whether corporate earnings can ultimately justify current valuation multiples.
"The key question is whether earnings can deliver what current valuations imply," financial experts note, stressing that investors must look beyond depressed share prices. Companies will need to demonstrate consistent earnings growth to sustain their valuations in an environment influenced by elevated crude oil prices, rising bond yields, and potential corporate earnings downgrades.
Market strategists recommend maintaining a disciplined margin of safety by accumulating quality businesses in phases. Particular favor is being directed toward enterprises characterized by robust balance sheets, healthy cash-flow generation, and improving capital efficiency—especially those with the capacity to double their earnings over the next three to five years. Selective opportunities are increasingly visible in sectors such as financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, and wealth management.
Looking Ahead to FY27 Recovery
While caution remains the prevailing sentiment for immediate trading horizons, the broader market correction has undoubtedly improved the risk-reward matrix for patient capital. With the Nifty trading below its trailing historical averages from the past one, three, and five years, market participants are eyeing a projected earnings recovery in FY27 as a critical catalyst capable of providing fundamental support to market valuations in the medium term.
