Tragedy in Rajasthan: Eight Workers Electrocuted During Road Construction in Jhunjhunu
Eight laborers lost their lives and five others sustained severe burn injuries after a roadwork mixing machine came into contact with a high-tension power line in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district.

Fatal Accident Strikes Rural Road Project
JAIPUR — A routine road construction initiative turned into a devastating tragedy on Monday in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, where eight laborers were electrocuted. Five other workers sustained severe burn injuries and are currently undergoing emergency medical treatment at local healthcare facilities.
The incident unfolded in Chhapoli village, situated within the Udaipurwati police station jurisdiction. According to local authorities, workers were engaged in building a narrow connector road linking Chhapoli to Kadamkund through a public participation framework.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a mechanical gravel mixer being operated at the site inadvertently came into direct contact with an overhead high-tension electricity line. The catastrophic touch energized the machinery, instantly passing a lethal electrical current through the laborers operating and surrounding the equipment.
Identification and Casualties
Local law enforcement confirmed the identities of the deceased victims as Hariram Gurjar (30), Mangalchand Gurjar (22), Kaluram Gurjar (20), Pavan Gurjar (23), Vishnu Saini (38), Suresh Saini (30), Mukesh Saini (27), and Fatehchand Saini (32).
Medical officials at the hospital stated that among the injured are three women and two men. Doctors are closely monitoring their recovery, noting that some victims are suffering from critical burn percentages.
Swift Government Response and High-Level Inquiry
The tragedy has triggered urgent responses from both state and national leadership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the incident and announced financial relief for the affected families.
"Saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. My condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest," the Prime Minister's Office posted on social media.
An ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) has been allocated for the next of kin of each deceased individual, while the injured will receive Rs 50,000.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma also extended his condolences and ordered an immediate high-level administrative inquiry. He instructed the district collector to submit a comprehensive factual report and ensure uncompromised medical care for the survivors. State Cabinet Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra was dispatched directly to the accident site to oversee relief operations and offer administrative support.
Accountability and Safety Concerns
State Energy Minister Heeralal Nagar shed light on the initial findings, noting that the project was executed privately on a small scale via community involvement rather than a major state-contracted tender. Technical inspection teams have been mobilized to evaluate site safety compliance.
"Technical officials have been directed to visit the spot and ascertain the circumstances that led to the accident. If any departmental or technical lapse is found, action will be taken," Minister Nagar stated.
Political leaders across party lines have demanded strict scrutiny of safety protocols at rural construction sites. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot called for a thorough investigation to establish accountability, urging the state administration to extend substantial financial packages to the grieving families. Local leaders and former legislators also visited the site, pressing for government employment and enhanced compensation for the dependents of the deceased workers.
