Breakthrough at Jamia Millia Islamia

Students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) have officially called off their nearly two-week-long agitation after arriving at a comprehensive agreement with the university administration. The protest, which had intensified significantly in recent days, centered primarily on the revival of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU) and the retraction of disciplinary measures taken against participating students.

According to an official order issued by the university Registrar, the agitation has been discontinued with immediate effect following a mutual understanding between the two parties.

Key Terms of the Agreement

Under the newly brokered accord, the university has agreed to conduct student union elections within 15 days of the formal approval of the union constitution. Notably, student union polls have remained dormant at the central university since 2006, fueling prolonged demands for formal representation.

Additional concessions granted by the administration include: * Revocation of Disciplinary Actions: All suspensions and show-cause notices issued to students during the course of the protest will be rescinded. * Security Inquiry: A dedicated committee will be established to investigate the actions and conduct of security personnel during the demonstrations. * Public Apology: As part of the reciprocal terms, the protesting students are slated to issue a public apology during a press conference regarding offensive remarks and social media posts directed at the administration during the height of the agitation.

Escalation Prior to the Breakthrough

The breakthrough comes on the heels of escalating tensions on campus. Earlier in the week, the Students' Federation of India (SFI) reported that four students had initiated an indefinite hunger strike, while a PhD scholar named Sanam staged a continuous sit-in at the Gulistan-e-Ghalib lawns.

In a final push to resolve the standoff prior to the agreement, Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif and Registrar Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi led a large contingent of more than 1,500 teaching and non-teaching staff members in a march from the Ansari Auditorium lawns to Gate No. 7.

While staff members appealed to the protesters for over two hours to vacate the site, tensions briefly flared as administrators alleged that some demonstrators pushed security and academic personnel before the staff eventually withdrew.

With the signing of the new agreement, normalcy is expected to return to the JMI campus as both students and administration move toward implementing the terms of the settlement.
