Sultanpur Court Clears Congress Leader
SULTANPUR — In a significant legal development, a special MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur district has acquitted senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in a high-profile defamation case dating back to 2018.
Gandhi personally appeared before the court for the pronouncement of the judgment, which brought an end to proceedings initiated over remarks he made against then-BJP president and current Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the run-up to the Karnataka Assembly elections.
Background of the Case
The criminal defamation lawsuit was originally filed under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by Vijay Mishra, who served as a local Bharatiya Janata Party district vice-president at the time. Mishra claimed that Gandhi’s remarks at a Bengaluru rally caused severe anguish to party workers, prompting him to pursue legal action through his counsel.
Following years of procedural hearings, the court issued summons to Gandhi in late 2023. The Congress leader subsequently traveled to Sultanpur to surrender, secure formal bail, and contest the allegations.
Legal Representation and Defense
Throughout the proceedings, Gandhi's defense team maintained that the statements in question did not constitute criminal defamation and were protected under free political discourse. The legal defense was spearheaded by Senior Advocate RS Cheema, alongside advocates Kashi Shukla, Tarannum Cheema, Prasanna S, and Akash Singh.
Ahead of the final verdict, Uttar Pradesh Congress president Aradhana Mishra 'Mona' expressed unwavering confidence in the judicial process, telling reporters that the party trusted the integrity of the judiciary as Gandhi traveled to Sultanpur to face the ruling.
The court ultimately sided with the defense, concluding that the remarks did not meet the legal threshold for defamation, thereby closing a chapter on the multi-year legal battle.
