Upholding Academic Dignity in Bihar Schools

In a decisive move to restore institutional discipline and professionalism, the Bihar Education Department has directed all educational establishments across the state to strictly enforce a formal dress code for both teaching and non-teaching staff. Alongside the attire mandate, authorities have officially prohibited the use of DJs and disco-style entertainment during campus events.

The directive was formalized through an administrative communication issued by Vijay Kumar Pandey, Director (Administration) of the Education Department, directing all district education officers to ensure immediate and strict compliance.

Curbing Casual Attire

Addressing reporters, Education Minister Mithlesh Tiwari emphasized that a teacher's conduct and appearance serve as fundamental pillars for student development. Highlighting the traditional ethos encapsulated in the Sanskrit proverb 'Vidya Dadati Vinayam' (education instils humility), Tiwari noted that students naturally look up to educators as role models.

According to the department, official assessments revealed a growing tendency among staff members to attend schools in casual clothing, including jeans and T-shirts, despite previous advisories. Officials drew parallels to high-stakes professional environments, noting that formal attire is strictly mandatory for legal proceedings before the Supreme Court of India and the Patna High Court to maintain institutional dignity.

DJ Performances and Campus Culture Banned

The fresh directives also crack down heavily on cultural practices deemed detrimental to the academic environment. The education ministry explicitly flagged the growing trend of organizing DJ performances, disco nights, and other low-tier entertainment events on school premises.

While traditional and dignified cultural programs—such as classical dance and music performances aligned with the official academic calendar—remain permissible on special occasions, the administration has drawn a firm line against commercialized or rowdy celebrations.

District Enforcement

District education officers have been tasked with overseeing day-to-day implementation and ensuring that all personnel adhere strictly to the decent, dignified, and formal dress guidelines during teaching hours and administrative shifts. The state government maintains that these measures are vital to safeguarding the sanctity and professional reputation of the teaching profession.
