Bihar Overhauls Public Education with Tech Partnerships

In a sweeping move to modernize public education, the Bihar Education Department has officially announced a strategic partnership with 11 leading information technology companies, including Google Education. The collaboration is designed to deliver specialized training in digital literacy and artificial intelligence (AI) to government school teachers, aiming to drastically elevate classroom instruction standards across the state.

The ambitious initiative receives crucial backing from the Union government's skill development department. It forms a central pillar of Bihar's broader push to integrate advanced technology into foundational education and prepare educators for a digital-first pedagogy.

Mandatory Computer Education and Smart Classrooms

Complementing the teacher-focused training modules, the state government has confirmed plans to mandate computer education starting from Class 6 across all state-run schools effective from the next academic session. To support this massive transition, education authorities are rapidly upgrading IT infrastructure and rolling out dedicated smart classrooms.

According to state officials, an initial rollout of smart classrooms is slated for 700 model schools. Once these pilot facilities are evaluated and deemed successful, the state plans to scale up the infrastructure across remaining government institutions in subsequent phases.

Centralized Training Hub at SCERT

To execute the program systematically, the Education Department is currently establishing a centralized training ecosystem at the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) campus in Patna.

Under this framework, participating technology firms will conduct specialized, hands-on instruction in staggered batches. School principals have been tasked with nominating educators for the program. The curriculum emphasizes practical IT competencies and AI-driven teaching methodologies that instructors can directly apply in everyday classroom environments.

Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari emphasized that artificial intelligence will receive distinct, focused attention under the new framework. The core objective, he noted, is to fundamentally upgrade the quality of teaching delivery and bridge the digital divide for students in government-run institutions.
