CBSE Streamlines Class 9 and 10 Curriculum for 2026-27 Session: Key Changes and Subject Requirements
The Central Board of Secondary Education has announced key curriculum updates for Class 9 and 10 starting in the 2026-27 academic session, omitting select interdisciplinary modules.

Curriculum Overhaul for 2026-27 Academic Session
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced significant updates to the Scheme of Studies for Class 9 for the upcoming 2026-27 academic session. Under the revised guidelines, these changes will naturally extend to the same cohort of students as they progress to Class 10 in the 2027-28 academic year.
According to the official circular, the board aims to streamline the academic workload while maintaining core foundational subjects. Notably, students currently enrolled in Class 10 during the 2026-27 period will remain under the existing framework, ensuring a smooth transition exclusively for the incoming batches.
Adjustments to Interdisciplinary and Technical Modules
In a strategic adjustment regarding interdisciplinary learning, the board has clarified that the subject 'Individuals in Society,' alongside specific modules on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), will be excluded from the Class 9 curriculum for the 2026-27 session.
Furthermore, 'Environmental Education' will not form part of the curriculum when these students advance to Class 10 in the 2027-28 academic cycle. The board has indicated that these adjustments are designed to better align the implementation schedule with broader educational frameworks.
Mandatory Vocational Education Framework
Vocational Education remains a core component of the secondary education structure. Students in Class 9 for the 2026-27 session must fulfill this requirement by choosing either 'Kaushal Vikas' or one of the 22 specialized skill subjects formally notified by the board.
* Kaushal Vikas (Skill Development): Students opting for this pathway will undergo internal assessments. * Skill Subjects: Students selecting any of the 22 designated skill subjects will be required to appear for external board examinations during their Class 10 term in 2027-28.
Subject Structure and Board Examination Requirements
Under the revised guidelines, students in the designated batch will be required to study a total of nine subjects. The complete academic lineup comprises:
1. Language R1 2. Language R2 3. Mathematics 4. Science 5. Social Science 6. Language R3 7. Art Education 8. Physical Education and Well-being (PE&WB) 9. Vocational Education (Skill Education)
Of these nine subjects, formal board examinations at the conclusion of Class 10 in the 2027-28 session will be restricted to five core areas: Language R1, Language R2, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.
Special Provisions for Children with Special Needs (CwSN)
The board has also outlined dedicated provisions for Children with Special Needs (CwSN). Candidates under this category are required to study one compulsory language featuring a board examination. The remaining four subjects for the board assessment can be flexibly chosen from Mathematics, Science, Social Science, or any additional listed language option.
